Confucius, Confucianism and Taoism – Will it blend?
Confucius, Confucianism and Taoism – Will it blend?
I assume you all had researched and read about this guy “Confucius” Kongzi or (Hung Ji in Cantonese 孔子). So I won’t go on and on lecturing about what he taught and so on. I want to keep it as short as possible here or else I will write a 200 page report here to get my message across. The basic subject we are going to about is — Confucius’s Confucianism AND Taoism — Will it blend?
Many Taoism sects in the past had went into the path of 3-in-1 because of the crooked politics, kings an queens in China in back then forcing this to happen. The kings and queens wanted Buddhism in the country so bad because they are into it and they want everybody into it as well. It was not accepted by the people at first and they modified it to fit the taste of Chinese culture and that is the birth of Chan’s Buddhism. Which is a Chinese-style Buddhism, totally changed to fit the Chinese’s taste — blending it with Taoism culture. The dogs and slaves of these kings who are willing to bow down and lick their toes will survive, those sects that don’t agree and want to stay pure Taoism got nuked. Yes, what’s left in China now is only crooked Taoism, the Quan Zhen Sect and the Zhen Yi Sect are famous ones. Anyway, let’s talk about Confucius and Confucianism.
Being brief here, what Confucianism is and why Confucius is so famous? Here is a summary of this person and what he promotes or did in his whole life.
551BC, this person Confucius is born in the spring-autumn period, named Hung Ji (Kongzi). That is not his real name, his name is “Jung Li 仲尼”. There is a system in Chinese naming which say if there is more than a child, they will name it by using 伯, 孟, 仲, 季 (Baak, Meng, Jung, Gwai) for the first word. Oldest one will be Baak something, then second is Meng X, the third be Jung Y and the last be Gwai Z… and so on. It just cycle on when there are more kids. So basically you see that Confucius is the third child and he must have at least an elder brother. (where do we see that in the history book? nobody mentioned it much).
When he is three years old, his father died and his mom took him to another city to live. (wow, almost same as me, my father died when I am four.) Then when he turn 17, his mother also passed away. (how come they die so fast?)
When he is 19 years old, he married a lady who is one of the royal family daughter and he got a job working for the king as a little guy who is responsible for the tax stuff with the farmers. (Solid proof of disrespectfulness here. In the Chinese culture, when your parents die, you should NOT do anything like getting married within 3 years of time, that is even in his system of teachings later on but he don’t follow it himself. The Chinese culture all knows, when your parent pass away, you should remain plain and simple to pay respect to them for 3 years and honor them with respect and your mind, etc,.. that is the common culture back then but he don’t seems to even follow it himself.) After a year, his child “Baak Yue 伯魚” (see? one kid, it is Baak something) was born. (Okay, this guy had sex with the wife RIGHT on that day he married the lady? how come the son is born just one year after marriage? Nice guy, he really do know the culture! Where is his respect for his parent’s death? All the Chinese culture stuff is tossed to the rubbish bin.)
During is 29, he went to another city to learn the Chinese zither from a music teacher. Then at about 30 years old he already started to promote his school system of teaching. Four years later, he ditch that teaching and went to learn from Lao Tze about what they called “Lai 禮” meaning virtues and ethics, or you can call it etiquettes of the Chow Dynasty. It’s a big subject back then.
After a long time, during his 51 he got a promotion with his job and he got some fame there but then after 3-4 years he try to convince the king to buy his idea to change the politics and he failed. He thought the success during his 51-52 is pretty good and should be fine but too bad things do not work the way he wanted. What does he do when he failed to convince with his proposal? Yes, you are right, this “SAGE OF THE ERA” had just flee with his student and walked out of the country and left his job like that. (VERY IRRESPONSIBLE PERSON! Imagine you got a job and you suggest something to your boss and they say they don’t want to do it, you walk out of the office and left with your friends to another country the other day and ditched the job, wow, great, you really can become the next Confucius!) Here is the essence to the story though, he left the country like that and he ditched his wife and child. He left with his students but he didn’t took his wife and family with him, just look at what kind of life he is living by himself? He just don’t care about his family at all. All he want is his ideas and theory be promoted, tons of fame and success and that’s all. His wife and kids are not important to him at all or else he would have bring them with him like a family going to another place to live!
His wife died after 13 years he ditched them.. and he finally came back one year after his wife passed away. Oh yes, his child also died from sickness after a few months he arrived home. Wow, just in time to see two funerals. Look at how caring and loving the father is here, basically he don’t even treat his wife and child good with care and their living standard is not even healthy and good. A man who can just care about himself and not his family means that he is a selfish person and all he care about is himself. The good way to say it is to say that he care about “the world” because he wanted to spread the “wisdom” all around the world so bad so that “more people can benefit” but it is all some stupid excuses. The people in the later years can write all they want to cover it up with cosmetics to make him the best saint in the world, but then the truth is there, he is a very irresponsible man, selfish guy, and a bad father, bad husband and all he care about is himself.
He died at about 73 years old and that is 4 years after the death of his child. What he promoted was NOT all organized and taught by him, it was his students (they are like his buddies back then, following him all along) who organized all the stuff he taught them into a system and then formed the teaching system and wrote books to record it down in a conversation format and taught it to people later on. What Confucius knew and promoted in the past is not what you see today much. The stuff we see today is mostly theory and philosophies.. but in the history book, it is clearly stated that what Confucius is into when he is alive is the 6 major arts which are:
1) The etiquettes and virtues of Chow. Which can be proven because he go learn from Lao Tze for all those etiquettes stuff but he really is an epic fail to it because what he did later on was ditched his wife and became a super bad husband and father, extremely irresponsible and extremely selfish. So you can see he don’t do what he promotes.
2) Music – yes you can see he love it so much that he moved to another city to learn the Chinese Zither from a master. Big hobby there, just like many people love to learn violin, piano or flute etc,. What’s so special anyway?
3) Archery, this is one famous sport back then like how we have guns shooting in the modern society. If you say guns are evil, please put bows and arrows on the list, they are the same, and the arrows hurt more when it’s shot into a person.
4) Horse Riding, just like how we now learn to drive a car. Isn’t that just basics of life to learn for everyday purpose? What’s so special and holy about it anyway?
5) Writing and Literacy, just like we learn grammar, spelling, etc,. This one I agree, it’s very important.
6) Math, just like we have math in school today, algebra, calculus, etc,.
These are the 6 majors that he studied into and are good at. It is also why his students wanted to learn from him. Some wanted to learn his archery, some wanted to learn his music, some wanted to learn his horse riding, some wanted to learn abit of everything etc,. During his lifetime, he got 72 close students who he taught and that’s about it. They were promoted as the 72 sages of the KongZi sect later on as well. Okay now let me tell you a more interesting version. Let’s take a look at what a normal person (average norm) should know in the modern days. Just like your kids or yourself.
1) Virtues and Ethics, morals and discipline… just like “Oops, excuse me” or “oh, sorry” or “thank you” and “welcome” or even to the everyday “good morning” etc,.
2) Music – we learn to play instrument in school when we are young, some even go for private classes as well like piano and so on.
3) Sport, can be anything from the gym class to archery, guns shooting, etc,. It’s a common thing that kids get into guns nowadays like airsoft, paintball, and airguns as well.
4) Driving a car, or even a boat, or even an airplane or helicopter. Most of us learn how to drive nowadays or at least ride a bike, a scooter or take the subway.
5) Writings and literacy, from grammar to spelling, reading to essays… you name it. We all got tortured in school for years just to get ourselves educated on these.
6) Mathematics, from basic math to calculus, algebra, or even more intense for physics, chemistry and so on. Yes, we even have science and many other things.
Okay, do you see it? We ALL have what Confucius are “good at” back then right now, do we all become a sage after graduation from the university or high school? Please, use your logic, just because people aren’t as educated before and think he is good doesn’t mean he is a sage or a wise one for wisdom. He might be talented in these skills, but his life is crooked and screwed. From his life, you see that he is very impatience even with all those music and stuff he does. Why? He left and ditched his job right after his first proposal to the king and it doesn’t work out. What the heck? Why don’t you use your “wisdom” and find a better method to promote or convince the king instead? Where is all the patience he promoted in music and literacy? Too bad, epic fail.
In Taoism, real Taoism, Tin Yat Lineage, we teach people to have wisdom and we are teaching people to be loyal, honest, trustworthy and have virtues. By that means you cannot ditch your family like that, which is very bad virtue and you are super selfish and ignorant. Just to ditch your king and left the job like that is being disloyal and not trustworthy for the king as well. He promote a life that he don’t live it himself which is dishonest in his speech as well. All I can say is, he is NOT a sage and he is not a person you should learn from. Taoism and Confucius’s path or Confucianism cannot blend. This is the fact and truth from history.
If I got a chance in the future, I will reveal the true translation of the Tao Te Ching and things Lao Tze promoted in the past (which are not exposed to the western culture) and you will know how bad Confucius did in his life if he is a student of Lao Tze. He failed to do what he learned and he failed to live a life he promotes. Do not fall for this path, Confucius is a crooked path, good for day dreaming but not for reality at all. Many things in the Confucianism system is more like “common sense” stuff only and you don’t need a SAGE to teach you that. You can learn it in school, from your parents and so on. What is so “sage and saint” about him and his path? Yes you can be reading his books and think “oh yeah, that is good, oh yeah, that make sense” but then it doesn’t mean that they are words of wisdom. They are just “common sense stuff” and it doesn’t make him a wise man or a sage. If you look at his life and things he did, you will find that he really scammed us all. If he had all those wisdom and he is so holy, he would not act like this. He is a liar, a scammer and for sure not one that we Taoist will agree with.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Recently, there is a movie called “Confucius” as well and THAT IS ALL NOT REAL HISTORY. It’s all edited to become a movie and so everything is not real. Do not think that is history and believe it as it presented.
